Before you decide

Six matters we will clarify together

The right solution depends on more than the battery size. We examine both the physical framework and the operations the system must be able to deliver.

Facilities and installation The physical prerequisites
01
Grid connection

How much power is the facility permitted to import and export? We will clarify the capacity, grid connection terms, and any necessary reinforcements with the grid operator.

02
Location and permissions

Space, access, noise, fire safety, and any regulatory requirements are being investigated for the specific location.

03
Engineering and documentation

Batteries, inverters, switchboards and any transformer must be compatible. Supplier documentation and grid connection requirements must be clarified before commissioning.

Energy and operations Application throughout the service life of the facility
04
Capacity and lifespan

We distinguish between power in kW and energy in kWh. Usable energy, losses, operating window, and degradation are included in the assessment of the delivery time.

05
Aggregation and market opportunities

Potential markets are assessed based on the facility’s documented properties and current product requirements. Agreements, communication, and prequalification must be in place before participation.

06
Operation and Maintenance

As the facility owner, it is a legal requirement to have the operational responsibility assigned to an approved company; furthermore, the facility must be serviced and maintained.

Our honest guide

The 12 obstructive constraints

Many suppliers downplay these barriers to close a deal faster. We present them openly because we believe transparency is the best protection against poor decisions — for you and for us.

Meganet System Engineering Physical and legal obstacles
01
Grid connection

Grid companies such as Radius or Cerius can refuse an application or demand millions for grid reinforcement if the primary transformer station is already burdened by solar cells and other installations. It is important to have your grid connection agreement in place before designing or purchasing a system.

02
The Transformer Trap

If the grid company's transformer is fully booked, you may have to purchase, install, and operate your own transformer station — this typically increases the initial costs.

03
Administrative processing

A battery container is considered industrial construction and triggers requirements for a rural zone permit, building permit, as well as noise and fire tests, with a processing time of 3-12 months at the municipality.

04
RfG approval

Energinet sets technical requirements for the facility, which must undergo thorough grid simulations before the final operational permit can be granted.

05
Global lead times

Vital high-voltage components and custom-built industrial panels often have a 3-6 month lead time from the factories, making promises of rapid operation unrealistic.

06
LER classification (Limited Energy Reservoir)

If your facility cannot deliver its full power for at least 4 consecutive hours, Energinet classifies it as an LER (Limited Energy Reservoir) facility — with stricter pre-qualification requirements, including at least 4 hours of storage in each direction for aFRR capacity bids and an approved EMS. This is one of the reasons why we recommend sizing for at least 4 hours of capacity from the start.

Meganet Aggregation Operational and market-related constraints
07
Price cannibalization

Smaller system performance markets like FCR are quickly becoming saturated, which pressures returns for players that can only bid into a single market.

08
IT uptime and penalty

Energinet requires over 99% uptime for the data connection. Brief outages or signal loss can trigger significant imbalance charges.

09
Imbalance costs

If the facility enters a fault state and fails to deliver its output or provides insufficient capacity, you must pay compensation to Energinet.

10
The opaque pool trap

Some operators pool investors into a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), where the settlement is difficult to decipher — and by pooling your assets with an aggregator, you risk sharing the costs of others' plant issues instead of receiving your actual return.

11
Market transparency

To participate in the various markets, the facility must meet widely different requirements and be operated using different methods. It is therefore important to have knowledge of the markets, the operating mode of the facility, and the capabilities of the aggregator.

12
Partial actors

There are many companies that do not have all the necessary authorizations or competencies in place. This can create a need for more involved parties who each take a slice of the profit.

The sources of income

Educational dictionary

Two words you will be hearing a lot — explained without jargon.

Arbitrage
Charging and discharging at different times

We charge the battery when electricity is cheap — sometimes almost for free — and discharge it back to the grid when prices peak, which generates a profit.

System services
Flexibility for the power grid

You receive payment from Energinet simply for standing by and being ready to supply energy to the electricity grid, thereby securing the grid frequency against outages — regardless of whether your facility is actually activated.

Future-proofing

Our 4-hour philosophy

We recommend that investors size for at least 4 hours of capacity throughout the battery's lifespan (e.g., 1 MW power / 4 MWh storage) rather than the cheaper 1- or 2-hour systems that are often sold based on price alone.

  • Robust business model without de-rating penalties
  • Longer battery life thanks to lower cycle wear
  • Software that effortlessly shifts capacity to spot market arbitrage when system performance prices are low
Inexpensive 1-hour installation
1 time

Lower acquisition cost, but falls under the LER rules. This means stricter participation in the system service markets, faster cycle wear, and no real possibility of dynamically shifting capacity between markets.

Meganet's recommendation: At least 4 hours of capacity.
4 timer

A minimum of 4 hours of capacity is required to avoid de-rating penalties. More capacity reduces cycles and provides longer battery life. For the aFRR capacity market, the requirement for participation is at least 4 hours of capacity per service. If you wish to provide both upward and downward regulation, you must ensure you size for 8 hours of capacity.
