Backup power that earns money when it's not being used for backup

Battery (BESS) + Load bank + Generator + DC charging station. The facility is on standby for emergency power but participates in the ancillary services market the rest of the time.

~59% Internal Rate of Return (IRR)
203% ROI
Up to 40% State subsidy (max. DKK 4 million)
The facilities

Four components — backup and earnings in one

Battery (BESS)

Instant emergency power and access to FCR, aFRR, and mFRR the rest of the time — both upward and downward regulation.

Load bank

Absorbs excess power from the grid. Participates in the downward regulation market (FCR-D down, mFRR down) and complements the battery.

Generator

Diesel-powered with Stage 5 emission requirements. Provides emergency operation during prolonged outages and participates in mFRR upward regulation when the battery alone is insufficient.

DC charging station

Publicly accessible charging station — qualifies for government subsidy.

This is how we deliver it

From potential to turnkey operation

01

Technical advice & sizing

We will base our assessment on your critical load and desired backup duration to size the battery, load bank, and generator for the right balance.

02

Electrical authorization & authority approval

Our own electricians handle all contact with authorities, as well as the grid company's and Energinet's requirements for grid connection and pre-qualification.

03

Grant application

We will apply for the Danish Road Directorate’s charging station subsidy on your behalf — up to 40% in government grants for the battery system, when the pool is open.

04

Turnkey installation

Our technicians deliver, install, and commission batteries, load banks, generators, and charging stations — from foundations and electrical panels to grid connection.

05

Market access & ongoing operations

Our VPP platform handles technical qualification and manages the asset continuously, so it is ready as emergency power while participating in the ancillary services market the rest of the time.

Scalable setup

Frequently asked questions

About Backup Flex

How quickly does the generator engage during a power failure?

The battery provides instantaneous coverage for the first few seconds. The generator starts automatically and takes over if the outage lasts longer.

What are the operating costs for the generator?

Approx. 123 DKK/kW/year for service and approx. 965 DKK/kW/year for diesel under normal use — both are included in the business case above.

Can I receive a grant without a generator?

Yes — see the Grants page for the full rules. The generator is not a condition for the grant, only the charging station is.

What size should the system be designed for our needs?

We will base our approach on your critical load and desired backup duration to find the right balance between battery and generator capacity.

Can the generator run on HVO or biogas instead of diesel?

Yes — see the Generator page for details on HVO and biogas-ready operation, which significantly reduces the plant's environmental footprint.

What warranty comes with the system?

The battery comes with a 10-year standard warranty on capacity. The generator and load bank have their own manufacturer warranties, which we will review in detail during the meeting.

How much can I receive in subsidies per charging station?

Max. DKK 220,000 per charging point for a fast charger (≥150 kW), and max. 40% of the project's total costs — the lower amount applies. The charging stations must be publicly accessible.

Is the grant pool always open for applications?

No — the reopening of the pool depends on the Danish Road Directorate's decision from time to time. Contact us, and we will check the status of the current application round before you scope the project.

Who owns the facility?

You can choose full ownership, co-ownership with Meganet, or an operating agreement where we own the facility and you receive a share of the revenue. We will review the specific models at the meeting.
