Feasibility study of hydrogen plant
Assessment of the resource base, economy, and financing model for a Power-to-X project, prior to the facility owner making an investment decision.
Challenge, solution and result
Challenge
The facility owner considered investing in a hydrogen plant (Power-to-X) but lacked a solid basis for deciding whether the site had the necessary resource foundation and whether the project could be financed and operated profitably.
Solution
Meganet conducted a feasibility study that mapped access to electricity and water, assessed local grid connection capacity, and established a concrete financial model for plant size, operating costs, and hydrogen sales opportunities.
Result
The facility owner received a technically substantiated basis for decision-making with concrete figures for investment, operation, and financing — and a clear picture of the prerequisites that had to be met before the project could be initiated.
Three areas we mapped
Resource base
Access to electricity, water, and grid connection capacity at the site.
Economy
Business case for facility size, operating costs and sales.
Financing model
Concrete proposal for capital structure and potential support schemes.
About the preliminary study
How long does a preliminary examination take?
Typically a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the complexity of the resource base and how much data is already available about the site.
What does a preliminary examination cost?
The price depends on the scope of the project and how much mapping of electricity, water, and network connections is required. We will provide a specific quote after an initial dialogue.
Is it about green or grey hydrogen?
Our preliminary studies focus on green hydrogen produced via electrolysis using renewable energy, as this is the model that provides access to the most subsidy schemes and demand segments.
What happens after the preliminary examination?
The facility owner has a concrete basis for decision-making and can choose to proceed to detailed design and regulatory approval — or stop if the prerequisites are not met.
Are there any subsidy options available for the hydrogen plant itself?
There are ongoing national and EU funding schemes for Power-to-X projects. We evaluate relevant pools as part of the feasibility study.
Can Meganet also handle the construction project itself afterwards?
Yes — the preliminary study is typically the first step in a collaboration where we can also assist with design, authority liaison, and implementation.
Are you considering a Power-to-X project?
We will conduct a concrete feasibility study before you have to make an investment decision.
