System services have become a strategic business
Not just a technical necessity — but a new revenue stream for companies and investors.
Ancillary services - A strategic business
Last updated: June 3, 2026.
The green transition is fundamentally changing the way the Danish electricity system functions. New challenges for grid stability are simultaneously creating new business opportunities.
50 Hz — the frequency the electricity grid must keep constant. 2040 — Energinet is anticipating significant growth leading up to this year. FCR · aFRR · mFRR — the three primary system service markets. Under 30 seconds — response time for a modern battery plant.
Whereas electricity production previously came from a few large power plants, the energy system today consists of thousands of wind turbines, solar parks, batteries, and flexible consumption units.
This development creates new challenges for the stability of the power grid — but also new business opportunities. At Energinet, they are currently seeing historic growth in the number of facilities providing system services. In just a few years, the number of approved units has risen explosively, and batteries have become one of the most interesting technologies in the market.
What are system services?
System services are the services that ensure the electricity grid remains stable around the clock. The frequency must be kept close to 50 Hz, and production and consumption must be constantly in balance.
Previously, this task was primarily handled by large central power plants. Today, batteries, industrial consumers, heat pumps, solar parks, and other flexible energy facilities can also participate. Companies can now create an additional revenue stream by making flexibility available to the electricity system.
Batteries are taking on a key role
Battery plants can react in just a few seconds and are therefore particularly well-suited for many of the system services that Energinet requires. At the same time, technology costs are falling, while markets are becoming more mature and accessible.
For investors and companies, batteries are no longer just about energy storage. They are increasingly becoming an active market resource that can generate value through participation in balancing and reserve services.
Future growth lies in flexibility
Energinet's analyses indicate that the need for system services will increase significantly towards 2040. The reason is simple: Denmark is electrifying more and more sectors. More electric vehicles, more heat pumps, and more renewable energy increase the need for flexible resources that can support the balance of the grid.
aFRR and mFRR are becoming increasingly important
In recent years, development has moved from traditional frequency reserves toward more advanced balancing markets such as aFRR and mFRR. These markets are becoming increasingly important in line with the rising amount of wind and solar energy.
At the same time, Denmark has become more closely integrated with European markets, which provides access to larger trading areas and increased competition. For the players, this means more opportunities, but also higher requirements for technology, control, and market understanding.
From energy cost to business opportunity
The biggest change in the coming years will likely be the way companies view energy. Where energy was previously considered a pure operating cost, flexibility is now becoming a potential revenue stream.
At Meganet, we follow these developments closely and help companies identify the opportunities that arise as the energy system becomes more flexible, digital, and market-based.
Important point: Flexibility will become one of the most valuable resources in the energy system of the future. Companies that are already investing in batteries or flexible energy consumption today are positioning themselves for a market with growing demand.
Three primary markets
FCR (Frequency Containment Reserve) — stabilizes the frequency during small deviations. Responds automatically within seconds.
aFRR (Automatic Frequency Restoration) — automatic restoration of system balance. The market is experiencing strong growth.
mFRR (Manual Frequency Restoration) — activated during larger imbalances. Sets high requirements for energy capacity.
The winners of the future will be the companies that manage to combine energy consumption, technology, and market access in a unified strategy.
